Hump Day Tip #2 - Trial antivirus software

Posted by crownadmin in Windows Vista

So you just bought a new laptop or PC and 6 months later you are bogged down with a plethora of viruses. How can this be possible when it said right on the box Norton/McAfee antivirus software included? Well antivirus programs work off a system of updates called "virus definitions". These new definitions are downloaded daily or weekly and they keep your antivirus software up-to-date to the newest virus threats. After the free trial on your new computer system has expired then you will no longer receive the new definitions and soon after you will become infected by a new virus that you system does not recognize. It is important that you monitor how much time is left in your initial trial in order to avoid a larger headache in the future.

Hump Day Tip #1 - Multiple User Accounts to decrease virus/spyware threats

Posted by crownadmin in Windows Vista

Do you have children? Do you have other users that rely on your computer?

If yes to either, then you should create multiple accounts to decrease the chance of viruses/spyware from malicious software.  By default, a machine with one user automatically loads that account as the "Administrator".  An Administrator account allows all software to be installed despite it being "good" or "bad" and the computer's registry to be changed without any notification; the combination of these two can be very detrimental for a computer since it allows malicious software to have free-reign over your computer.

For your personal account, you can leave it as the Administrator and it's recommended that you password protect it.  For all additional users, you should make them Limited accounts and they can password protect themselves later if they choose.  A Limited account cannot modify the registry or install most software programs without Administrator rights.  Even though this is not a 100% way to block viruses/spyware, it will drastically decrease the chances.
